Math

The Summer Math Academy gives middle and high school students the opportunity to develop problem solving skills for use in the classroom and in the world. At the Church of the Covenant’s Saturday Tutoring Program, we want to give students the opportunity to apply core academic tools in concrete and practical environments. At the Summer Math Academy, students will refresh their core mathematical skills and participate in problem-
solving scenarios where those skills can be applied. For example, we will develop a mathematical strategy for winning at Uno by reviewing operations on fractions. Similarly, students will build up an understanding of topics such as mathematical modeling, combinatorial counting, and linear optimization to answer realistic questions using simple tools. The program has been designed by Andrew Edwards, a Ph.D candidate in mathematics at
Case Western Reserve University and a member of the Church of the Covenant.
